March 30 - Ravines and more

It was a nice day so I decided to go out for a small time after I went and got new tires on the car. The 1st spot was the Ravine Salamander Habitat. I finally brought a few rulers so i could take a few mesurements to keep track of age and individuals.  The other spots I visited today were not so productive went to a few pools/wetland habitat and heard a few spring peepers, wood frogs, and a green frog. Another spot had a few egg masses from Wood Frogs probably.

March 26 - Another Ravine

So I went out and hit a few spots today. Heard a few frogs. No idea what kind I dont know a thing about frog calls. Could have been a Duck for all I know.

I flipped another Ravine Salamander about 20 ft or so from the one yesterday. This one looks a bit smaller than yesterdays. I really need to carry a Ruler.

March 25 - One Ravine

Started out today by going over to see if there were any Queen snakes or N. Watersnakes out basking in the sun, but nothing was hanging around the usual spots. Wind was a bit chilly so probably not an ideal day. After checking along the creek I desided to hit the ravines in search of.. Ravine Salamanders. This was one of my best finds last year so I figured why not see if anything is out and about on that side of the road. A few rocks later I was kinda disapointed in not seeing much out. Almost called it quites for today when I desided to hike up the hill another few feet and flip a rock or two. Finally got a little luck with one Ravine Salamander all nice and snug under a rock. This makes three for the area and 4 total. I hope once it starts to warm up this place will be active and hold alot more nice little gems.

March 17th Westmoreland county , PA

Myself and a fellow herper went down to a nice little place in Westmoreland County PA today to get some herping in for the begining of the season. Our main goal today was Spring Salamanders but the only one we saw got away before being photographed, but we did come out with a big number of Redback Salamanders of diffrent color morphs including Redback, Leadback, and A Cream-redback. We also found one twolined salamander.

Totals for today where:
41 redback salamaders(15 were leadback phase)
1 two lined salamader
1 spring salamader (that i happen to lose before we i could catch it, Sorry John)
Some photos - Others can be seen in the gallery under salamanders and newts.

March 13th SW PA

Seems like we are getting a day or two of warm weather here in the South Western part of PA. Went out for a small hike today to see if there was anything moving. Not much really just a few Northern Dusky Salamanders for one of my normal spots. Headed over to some Ravine Habitat but no luck there. Maybe next weeks weather will start to bring some more activity out.
