SW PA - April 29th - Mating Queens

Temp: 68f
Time: 1:05
Overcast Skies

10+ Nerodia
6-8 Queens
1 Black Rat Snake

This morning I took my daughter out for a little hike around the creek to get out on such a nice day for a little while.

We seen a few Nerodia along the creek and swimming around. Which really excited Kyra.
While she was playing around and throwing things in the water, I desided to take a look around one of my queen spots and looked down to see something perrty exciting.

There were 5-7 Queens all together in a mating ball. This was quite the thrill so I took some quick shots not wanting to disturb them. I sat and watched till I guess they noticed us and started moving away.

There was one bigger Queen about 3ft long which I belive was the female and the others were around 1.5 to 2 foot long and more slender than the other.

After the seperated I was able to handle one and show my daughter and take a few photos. This was one of the smaller ones (belived to be a male.

Here is the (female) a few mins later laying near the edge of the water.

When we were leaving I noticed something on the footpath a little ahead of us.
This was one Monster Black Rat Snake. I would Guess 6 to 6.5 Foot long and pertty thick. Kyra really liked the Rat Snake and wanted me to catch it but I desided just to let it go about its business after I took a few photos, the it gracefully climbed up the tree next to us.

After I dropped Kyra off. I went back for around an hour outing and seen 5 Nerodia and 1 more Queen this was the 1st on I have seen in a tree.

Also Seen this Milk Snake (thanks to Rex and jeremiah for catching the mistake I made) that looked like it had been burned in one of the camp fires. THIS is the 1st milk ive seen in the area or anytime) too bad it was not alive.
